Curecanti National Recreation Area
Welcome to Curecanti National Recreation Area, consisting of three reservoirs of the Gunnison River including Colorado's largest body of water, the Blue Mesa Reservoir.
Park History: The first human inhabitants of this region arrived over 10,000 years ago and archeologists have discovered ancient structures called wickiups that are over 4,500 years old. In the late 19th century, the railroads arrived in the region and people began digging mines and setting up ranches. Curecanti National Recreation Area was established in 1965.
Flora and Fauna: Curecanti National Recreation Area helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the park boundaries include aspens, spruces, firs, columbines, bluebells, and Indian paintbrush. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include black bears, bobcats, bats, bighorn sheep, chipmunks, muskrats, coyotes, mice, elk, foxes, mountain lions, owls, bald eagles, herons, falcons, and hawks. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts miles of multipurpose trails, three lakes for aquatic activities, and so much more. Come on out and have fun.
