Welcome to Key West National Wildlife Refuge located in Big Pine Key, Florida. Refuge History: In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt established Key West National Wildlife Refuge in order to protect the breeding grounds of native birds and other wildlife. This is one of the first National Wildlife Refuges in the United States and the first in the Florida Keys. Out of it's 189,497 acres only 2,000 of them are dry land. Wildlife: Key West National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including sea turtles and over 250 bird species. Please treat their home with respect. For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts some of the world's best flats fishing and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
