Florida State Forests

Welcome to Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest located in south Florida not far from Lake Okeechobee.

Forest History: The land that is now Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest was heavily used for timber harvesting to provide the railroads spanning across south Florida with ties. Many small towns and sawmills began to spring up within the region. Remnants of sawdust piles from the Atlantic Land Improvement Company can be found inside the forest.

Wildlife: The dominant natural feature of Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest is the Okaloacoochee Slough which is one of the few remaining pre-Columbian landscapes in south Florida. Some of the wild animals that call this place home include black bears, white-tailed deer, gopher tortoises, wood storks, sandhill cranes, and the endangered Florida Panther. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest boasts miles of forest roads, numerous campsites, and so much more. Come on out and explore!
