Welcome to Hillsborough River State Park, one of the oldest State Parks in Florida.

Park History: The Hillsborough River was named for the late 18th century British Lord Earl of Hillsborough, Willis Hills. When Florida first became U.S. territory there were many conflicts between the new white settlers and the local Seminole tribe. Fort Alabama was construction on the banks of the Hillsborough River in 1835 in order to help protect the bridge over the river from rivaling forts. Fort Alabama only lasted for a few months before being destroyed by a fire and in 1836 Fort Foster was built on top of it's ruins. Fort Foster is still standing today. In the 1930's the Civilian Conservation Corps helped to build the park's amenities and Hillsborough River State Park opened to the public in 1938.

Wildlife: The cypress swamps, hardwood hammocks, and pine forests of Hillsborough River State Park help protect the home of numerous wild animals including bobcats, white-tailed deer, gopher tortoises, and owls. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors Hillsborough River State Park boasts over 100 campsites, miles of trails, and so much more. Come on out and explore.
