Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

Folkston, Georgia

Welcome to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, home of the spectacular Okefenokee Swamp located in southwest Georgia not far from Waycross.

Refuge History: Long before the arrival of European settlers the land that is now the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge was occupied by various Native American groups. Once white settlers did arrive there were attempts to drain the swamp and many timber companies harvested the trees. Throughout the years the swamp has also served as a hideout for many outlaws. In more recent years there was a threat from a proposed mine by the DuPont company but that problem has been solved.

Flora and Fauna: Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the refuge boundaries include pines, cypresses and ferns. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include black bears, deer, bobcats, alligators, frogs, and so many others. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts many numerous hiking and canoe trails, opportunities for wildlife viewing, and so much more. Come on out and explore.
