Georgia National Forests

Welcome to the Oconee National Forest located in central GA's Piedmont not far from the towns of Macon and Milledgeville. Like many of the eastern National Forests, much of the Oconee was once productive farmland before falling into the hands of Uncle Sam. Throughout the forest you can still see remnants of the farming days including old houses, fences, and cemeteries.

Flora and Fauna: The Oconee National Forest helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the forest boundaries include oaks, pines, and many ferns. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include bobcats (including the official mascot of nearby Georgia College and State University), foxes, deer, squirrels, and raccoons. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors this forest boasts miles of dirt roads and multipurpose trails, the reservoirs of Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair, and so much more. As owner of RecPlanet I want to tell you about my personal experience. I first discovered this place while attending college and sometimes dropped by to do some hiking or some driving on the forest roads. Though I never did get to see my official school mascot roaming through the woods I had no doubt in my mind that he was there. Come on out and explore!

This was RecPlanet place of the day on January 1, 2018 making it the first place of the day for the year 2018.
