Welcome to Hawaii's spectacular Volcanoes National Park. A place where one can see the results of over 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution. Inside the park boundaries are two of the world's most active volcanoes and gives the visitor insight on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands.

Flora and Fauna: Located more than 2,000 miles from the nearest continent, Volcanoes National Park is considered one of the planet's most spectacular biological landscapes. The park's elevation ranges from as low as sea level to as high as 13,677 feet at the top of Mauna Loa. Some of the plants that grow inside the park boundaries including silverswords, giant haipu'u's, and many others. Some of the wild animals that live here include carnivorous caterpillars, happy face spiders, Hawaiian monk seals, and short-eared owls. Please treat their home with respect.

Park History: The land that is now Volcanoes National Park as well as all of the Hawaiian islands were first settled over 1,600 years ago by Polynesians who said from the Marquesas Islands.   For the lover of the outdoors Volcanoes National Park boasts over 150 miles of trails, breathtaking scenery, and so much more. Come on out and explore.

This was RecPlanet place of the day on April 12, 2016.

Volcanoes National Park grew by over 16,000 acres in size in August 2022.
