Welcome to the Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area located in Grundy County, Illinois near Braceville.

Preserve History: Much of this land was once used for strip mining and Braidwood Lake itself was built by the Commonwealth Edison Company for use as a private oasis for company workers. In 1981, the State of Illinois started a long term lease agreement with Commonwealth Edison for the land to be opened up to public use.

For the lover of the outdoors this preserve has much to offer. It is a popular destination for hunters and fisherman. Boaters must use caution because conditions on the lake can be rough and boaters are asked to check the color coded flags at the boat launch for current conditions. One of the unique opportunities this place has to offer is fossil hunting for fossils from the Pennsylvanian age. Come on out and explore.
