Clinton Lake State Recreation Area

Dewitt, Illinois

Welcome to the Clinton Lake State Recreation Area located in Dewitt, Illinois.

Park History: The land that makes up the Clinton Lake State Recreation Area is actually owned by the AmerGen Power company which operates a local nuclear facility. Before the arrival of European settlers it is believed that the region's bottomwood deciduous forest and upland prairies were the sites of hunting camps and villages of the Illinois and Kickapoo tribes. Many of the first European born settlers migrated to the region from Kentucky and Tennessee in the mid 19th century to set up farms. In the 1970's a damn was built to create Clinton Lake.

Today Clinton Lake is a very popular destination for fisherman with many catches weighing in at over 10 pounds. Please note that the lake's bass put up a real fight so be sure to hold onto your pole. The park also offers a 1,000 foot swimming beach and six public boat ramps and there are no limits on horsepower on most of the lake's surface and water-skiing is a popular activity. There are also over 10 miles of multipurpose trails here and over 300 campsites. Come on out and have a blast!

Most of the campsites have electrical and water hookups. To contact the park office please call 217-935-8722.
