Franklin Creek State Natural Area
Founded as a state nature preserve in 1970, the land that is now Franklin Creek State Natural Area was settled by pioneers in the 1830's. The springs provided fresh drinking water as well as fish to eat and the woods provided lumber for local home construction. A large grist mill was built in 1847 and efforts to reconstruct the mill have been ongoing since 1987.
Today many of the parks natural features are named after the pioneer families. The preserve also provides habitat for many creatures such as foxes, weasels, raccoons, blue herons, woodpeckers, warblers, beavers, and deer.
