Big River State Forest
Welcome to the Big River State Forest located in western Illinois on the banks of the Mississippi Rivernear Keithsburg.
Forest History: In 1925, the State of Illinois purchased 200 acres of land and created the Oquawka Refuge, the oldest pine plantation in the region with red, white, and jack pines towering over 50 feet in height. Additional purchases and leases from the U.S Army Corps of Engineers in the 1940's increased the forest's size to 2,900 acres.
Today the forest is home to endangered plants such as the penstemon and Patterson's bindweed. Some of the forest's other species of plants include Indian grass, June Grass, prairie coneflower, purple prairie clover, and many others. The forest boasts over 60 miles of multipurpose trails, 3 boat ramps on the Mississippi River, and several picnic areas. Come on out and explore!
