Park History: The first inhabitants of this land were the Native American mound-building tribes of the Peoria, Cahokia, Kaskaskia, Michigamie, and Tamaroa peoples. White settlement began in the 1830's when Steamboats started making their way up the Illinois River and eventually bringing with them the railroad builders. The land became a state park in 1950 and since then has grown from a size of 632 acres to 2,032 acres. The campgrounds are class C and class D which means no electricity or running water. Come on out and explore!
