Beall Woods State Park
Welcome to Beall Woods State Park located on the banks of the Wabash River in Mount Carmel, Illinois. Beall Woods State Park helps to protect one of the last remaining stands of virgin timber east of the Mississippi River and the trees range up to over 3 feet in diamater and 120 feet in height.
Park History: In the 19th century the land that is now Beall Woods State Park was owned by Beall family who operated the land as a working farm. When the last living heir of the family passed away the land was put up for auction and purchased by a man who had interest in harvesting the timber. Many local individuals and organizations did not want to see this land fall victim to timber harvesting so they filed protest. In 1965, the State of Illinois used eminent domain to purchase Beall Woods State Park and over 300 acres of the park were dedicated as the state's 14th nature preserve a year later.
Today the park boasts over four miles of trails for hiking only, a 15 acre fishing lake, campgrounds (all class C that means primitive), and picnic facilities. Come on out and have a blast!
