Kickapoo State Recreation Area
Welcome to Kickapoo State Park! This is one of the few parks in the state of Illinois that offers an opportunity for scuba divers. The land that is now Kickapoo State park was once a devastated landscape bearing the scars of strip coal mining by United Electric Coal. But in the past half century since mining stopped nature has made a slow and steady return and helped heal the landscape. Archeological research has unearthed evidence that Native Americans of the Mississipppian and Woodland Cultures occupied this land for over 1000 years, from as early as 500 AD and as recently as 1500 AD. Some of the first European settlers to the region were people who came to mine the area's salt in the 19th century.
Today the park offers over 12 miles of multi-purpose trails and provides wildlife habitat for rabbits, deer, raccoons, and squirrels. Come on out and explore.
About 92 of the campsites have electricity. To contact the office please call 217-442-4915.
