Castle Rock State Park
Welcome to Castle Rock State Park, located in the heart of Illinois's Rock River Hills region near the town of Oregon.
Park History: Castle Rock State Park was founded in 1978. The Sauk and Fox tribes inhabited this region until around 1730. They called the river "Sinnissippi" which means "Rocky Waters." In the 1830's many white settlers began moving into the region and the Blackhawk Indian wars erupted.
In 1921, the organization known as "Friends of Our Native Landscape" first proposed setting aside the lands as a State Park. In the 1960's and 1970's the State of Illinois and the Natural Lands Institute worked hard to achieve that goal and their wish was finally granted in 1978. Today the park is known for it's diverse vegetation including over 27 species of ferns and boasts deer, wild turkeys, and many other species.
For the lover of the outdoors Castle Rock State Park boasts over six miles of trails, primited undeveloped campsites, and so much more. Come on out and explore!
