Welcome to Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve located near Newport, Illinois on the banks of the Des Plaines River.

Preserve History: In 1961 Lake County purchased the land that is now Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve, establishing it's very first Forest Preserve. In the 1970's the county purchased an old gravel quarry that was minded for many decades and transformed it into what is now Sterling Lake. The preserve itself is named for David Van Patten, the first President of the Forest Preserve District.

Wildlife: Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve helps protect the home of numerous wild animals including raccoons, squirrels, hawks, and herons. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors this preserve boasts miles of multipurpose trails, a canoe launch, and so much more. Come on out and explore.
