Morgan-Monroe State Forest

Martinsville, Indiana

Welcome to Morgan-Monroe State Forest, an oasis of hardwood forests, ridges, and valleys sprawling across Morgan and Monroe Counties in southern Indiana.

Forest History: Many of the first European settlers in the region came here in order to set up farms. However, they were disappointed to discover that the rocky soils were not good for agricultural use. In 1929, the State of Indiana purchased the land and helped restore what would become the Morgan-Monroe State Forest.

Wildlife: Morgan-Monroe State Forest helps protect the home of numerous wild animals including deer, squirrels, raccoons, and wild turkeys. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors this forest boasts over 20 miles of multipurpose trails, gold-panning opportunities (permit required), three fishing lakes, and much more. Come on out and explore.
