Red River National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Red River National Wildlife Refuge located in northwest Louisiana near Bossier City.
Refuge History: On October 13, 2000, in the final days of his presidency, President Bill Clinton signed the legislation creating Red River National Wildlife Refuge into law. In 2002, the first 1,377 acres were purchased and a dedication ceremony marked the official establishment of Red River National Wildlife Refuge. The legislation allows for up to 50,000 acres of land along the Red River to be purchased between the Arkansas State Line and Colfax, Louisiana. So far over 10,600 acres have been purchased and further negotiations are under way between local landowners and members of the Conservation Fund and Fish and Wildlife Service.
Wildlife: The shrub swamps, cypress sloughs, and bottomland hardwood forests that make up the Red River National Wildlife Refuge protect the home of numerous wild critters. Each year, upwards of 80,000 waterfowl birds drop by the refuge. Some of the other wild critters include bald eagles, alligators, alligator snapping turtles, rusty blackbirds, bats, and the endangered pallid sturgeon. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Red River National Wildlife Refuge boasts numerous hiking trails and fishing opportunities. Come on out and have a blast!
