Gathland State Park
Welcome to Gathland State Park in Jefferson, Maryland. This unique and historic park was once the home of Civil War Journalist George Alfred Townsend and in fact the Maryland's first major battle of the war, the Battle of South Mountain, was fought in this park. One can also access the Appalachian Trail here in this park.
The picnic shelter holds up to 100 people and can be reserved by calling 888-432-CAMP. Come out and see the 50 foot high and 40 foot wide War Correspondents Arch that was built in 1896. To contact the park office please call 301-791-4767.
