Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Welcome to Michigan's beautiful Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore located near the northwest corner of the lower peninsula. Some of the cliffs rise as high as 450 feet above the surface of Lake Michigan giving the visitor a spectacular view.

Trails: This wilderness park boasts all types of recreational activities including a 7 mile scenic road known as the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. The park also boasts over 100 miles of multipurpose trails for all seasons. These include the Platte Plains Trail which is over 15 miles through maple-beech and pine forests, the Hilly 1.5 mile Empire Bluff Trail which has great views of the lake, and many others.

Scuba Diving: The park's Manitou Passage Underwater Preserve is one of the greater places for scuba diving in the Great Lakes Region. Divers will see the remains of old docks lying on the bottom of Lake Michigan as well as The Three Brothers Steam Barge which sank in 1911.

Paddling: Sleeping Bear Dune's National Lakeshore is a paddler's paradise! With many miles on the Platte River, inland lakes, as well as 35 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline it will take more than just a day to explore the entire park.

Wildlife: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is home to many wild animals including bobcats, beavers, otters, deer, the occasional black bear, and over 240 species of birds making it a great bird-watching destination. Please treat their home with respect when visiting.
