Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge

Michigan

Welcome to Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge located in the center of Michigan’s lower peninsula. Refuge History: More than 10,000 years ago, a vast glacial lake covered much of this region. In more recent years, the Odawa and Ojibwa tribes hunted and gathered on this land. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries many industries began to harvest the lands resources including loggers, farmers, and coal miners. Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1953 in order to provide refuge for migratory waterfowl. Wildlife: The bottomland hardwood forests, marshes, and croplands of the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge help protect the home of numerous wild critters including deer and over 275 bird species. Please treat their home with respect. For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts over ten miles of multipurpose trails and much more. Come on out and have a blast!
