Bear Island State Forest
Welcome to Bear Island State Forest located in northeast Minnesota along the edge of the Superior National Forest and boundary waters wilderness area. This forest is home to the large Bear Island lake nestled between the Mesabi and Vermillion ranges.
Forest History: In the 19th Century most of what is now Bear Island State Forest was virgin white pine forest. Over the years timber harvesting and forest fires replaced much of the virgin pines with jack pines, aspens, birches, and others.
Flora and Fauna: Bear Island State Forest helps protect the home of numerous plant and animal species. Some of the plants that grow inside the forest boundaries include balsam firs, white spruces, red pines, and white pines. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include bears, wolves, moose, foxes, badgers, raccoons, beavers, otters, squirrels, and hawks. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Bear Island State Forest boasts over 15 miles of multipurpose trails, numerous picnic areas, boat launches, and so much more. Come on out and explore.
