Sakatah Lake State Park
Welcome to Sakatah Lake State Park located in southern Minnesota near Waterville.
Park History: The land in and around Sakatah Lake State Park is part of a glacial moraine formed by receding glaciers over 14,000 years ago. For a long time, the Dakota tribe inhabited this land and named it "Sakatah" which means "the sights and sounds of children playing on the hill" or "Singing Hills." The Dakota used many of the region's rivers for transportation and established numerous villages and trading posts along the riverbanks. In 1862, one of the first white settlers, Alexander Faribault, came to the region and established trading posts.
