Wild Horse Island State Park
Welcome to Wild Horse Island State Park, a majestic island located in the middle of Flathead Lake near Polson, Montana.
Park History: Before the arrival of European settlers, it is said that people of the Salish-Kootenai tribes kept many of their horses on this island in order to protect them from being stolen by members of other tribes. Today the island helps protect an endangered palouse prairie and many wildlife critters including bald eagles, turkey vultures, red-tailed hawks, bighorn sheep, coyotes, mule deer, and others. Please treat their home with respect.
This island can only be accessed by boat. This park is located inside the boundaries of the Flathead reservation so in order to fish one must obtain a Montana fishing license as well as one from the local tribe. But it's worth it, because the fishing is awesome! Come on out and explore.
