Bannack State Park
Welcome to Montana's historic Bannack State Park located on the banks of Grasshopper Creek near Dillon. This park, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is the site of Montana's first major gold discovery on July 28, 1862. The discovery set off a gold rush that caused Bannack's population to soar to over 3,000 people by 1863. However eventually the value of gold went down and Bannack became a ghost town. Today, 50 of the town's original buildings are still standing and historic reenactments take place each year in late July around the anniversary of the gold discovery. Come on out and enjoy some of the park's many activities and explore the park's "rich" (both literally and figuratively) history.
