Gallatin National Forest
Welcome to the beautiful Gallatin National Forest, nearly two million ares of snow covered peaks and "blue-ribbon trout streams sprawling across southwest Montana.
Forest History: The Gallatin National Forest was established in 1899. Today it makes up a section of the largest intact ecosystem in the continental United States, the Greater Yellowstone Area. It's nearly two million acres span across six mountain ranges and contain two Congressionally-designated wilderness areas, the Lee Metcalf Wilderness Area and the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area.
Wildlife: This forest helps protect the home of deer, grizzly bears, bald eagles, Canadian lynx, gray wolves, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors, the Gallatin National Forest offers numerous recreational opportunities. Some of the notable ski resorts inside the forest's boundaries include Bohart Ranch, Lone Mountain Ranch, and Bridge Ski Area. This forests also boasts over 2,600 miles of multipurpose trails, almost the distance from New York City to San Francisco. There is plenty more to be enjoyed here. Come on out and explore!
