Beaverhead Rock State Park

Twin Bridges, Montana

Welcome to Montana's Beaverhead Rock State Park located on the banks of the Beaverhead River near the town of Dillon.

Park History: In 1805, a young Shoshone Woman who was acting as a guide on the Lewis and Clark expedition knew from the rock's formation that she was possibly within the vicinity of her family. The expedition took hope from the sighting that they may be able to find some Native tribes from which to buy horses to help them complete their journey to the Pacific. In the words of Meriwether Lewis, "The Indian woman recognized the point of a high plain to our right which she informed us was not very distant from the summer retreat of her nation on a river beyond the mountains which runs to the west. This hill she says her nation calls the beaver's head from a conceived resemblance of its figure to the head of that animal. She assures us that we shall either find her people on this river or on the river immediately west of its source; which from its present size cannot be very distant."

This rock resembles a Beaver's Head and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It can only be viewed from a distance. Come on out and learn some history.
