New River State Park
Welcome to North Carolina's New River State Park located on the banks of the New River in Laurel Springs not far from the Virginia State Line. In the year of the nation's bicentennial, 1976, it was designed as a National Wild and Scenic River by the United States Department of the Interior. The New River itself is believed to be one of the oldest rivers on the continent dating back millions of years and having a human history that dates back over 10,000 years when the Native Americans used it for their hunting and fishing grounds. The river itself was named by Peter Jefferson, father of President Thomas Jefferson.
The park's dense forests help protect the home of many plants and animals including 14 endangered plant species. Some of the animals include white-tailed deer, black bears, raccoons, wild turkeys, ospreys, kingfishers, and many others. Come out and do a little bird-watching.
