Dismal Swamp State Park
Welcome to North Carolina's magnificent Dismal Swamp State Park located near South Mills. This place was once prime fishing ground for Native Americans and was even used to hide runaway slaves during the Underground Railroad as well as moonshiners. Today it is a fantastic place for kayaking as well as bird-watching. With the help of the Nature Conservancy this park was first established in 1974. Some of the resident wildlife include gray foxes, bobcats, frogs, turtles, deer and over 43 species of butterflies.
