John Hay National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to John Hay National Wildlife Refuge located in Newbury, New Hampshire.
Refuge History: The land that is now John Hay National Wildlife Refuge was once the estate of John Hay, the man for whom it’s named. John Hay served as private secretary to President Abraham Lincoln, U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, and Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. This refuge was first established in 1987 and many of the historic remains of the John Hay estate are managed by the organization “Friends of John Hay National Wildlife Refuge.” The remainder of the refuge helps protect the habitat of resident wildlife and migratory shorebirds. Please treat their home with respect.
