Bisti-De-Na-Zin Wilderness
Welcome to the Bisti-De-Na-Zin Wilderness a badland oasis boasting some of the most unique scenery in the Four Corners Region.
The name Bisti-De-Na-Zin has it’s roots in the Navajo language. Bisti translates to “a large area of shale hills” and is commonly pronounced (Bis-tie). De-Na-Zin (Deh-nah-zin) takes its name from the Navajo words for “cranes.” Petroglyphs of cranes have been found south of the wilderness area. The Kirtland Shale and Fruitland Formation are the two major geological formations in this wilderness. The Fruitland Formation contains interbedded sandstone, shale, mudstone, coal, and silt. The weathering of the sandstone forms the many spires and hoodoos (sculpted rock) found throughout the area. The Kirtland Shale dominates the eastern area of the wilderness and boasts rocks of many colors.
For the lover of the outdoors this wilderness boasts multipurpose trails, scenic vistas, and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
