Mashomack Preserve

Shelter Island, New York

Welcome to the beautiful Mashomack Preserve located in Shelter Island, New York just 90 miles from The Big Apple. This natural preserve helps protect 11 miles of coastline as well as many oak forests, wetlands, and fields. The human history of Shelter Island dates back to the Manhanset Native American tribe. Mashomack itself is a Native American term that means "where they go by water." In 1653 the tribe gave the land to a Quaker by the name of Nathaniel Sylvester. Since that time the land has gone through many owners until the Nature Conservancy gained title to the land in 1980. Come out and explore the trails.
