Welcome to Ohio's beautiful Portage Lakes State Park located near Akron. This park boasts over 2,000 acres of water surface thus allowing for all types of aquatic recreation. This park was considered a landmark as far back as the War of 1812. The City of Akron was first established in 1825 when the construction of canals brought industry to the region. The lakes themselves were carved out by glacial retreat at the end of the last ice age. It was in 1949 when this land became a state park.
