Ohio State Forests

Welcome to Fernwood State Forest located on the banks of the Ohio River in Jefferson County.

Forest History: Before the State of Ohio purchased this land in 1961, much of it was strip mined for coal. Fortunately for the forest, the limestone bedrock helps to minimize the production of mine water. In 1965 the Ohio Capital Improvements Program and Appalachian Region Development Act helped spark many reforestation and restoration efforts that have been very successful.

Wildlife: Fernwood State Forest helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including deer, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, largemouth bass, and catfish. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors Fernwood State Forest boasts over 3 miles of hiking trails, 22 campsites, and so much more. Come on out and explore!
