Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, a mixed grass prairie oasis in western Oklahoma.
Refuge History: Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge started off as a Forest Reserve established by President William McKinley in 1901. In 1905, President Teddy Roosevelt renamed it a game reserve and remains today as one of the oldest managed National Wildlife Refuges. Many tried to farm here but the rocky soils simply would not allow it.
Wildlife: Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including otters, buffalo, coyotes, prairie dogs, wild turkeys, and hawks. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge boasts three hiking trails, over 40 miles of gravel roads, and so much more. Come on out and explore.
