McConnells Mill State Park

Portersville, Pennsylvania

Welcome to McConnells Mill State Park located in western Pennsylvania north of Pittsburgh on the banks of Slippery Rock Creek. The beautiful Slipper Rock Gorge is a National Natural Landmark that was carved out by glacial retreat at the end of the last ice age thousands of years ago. The gorge floor is littered with boulders and due to the swiftness of the creek's waters swimming is not allowed. The park's name comes from the fact that there was once a grist mill that operated inside it. The mill itself was built by a man named Daniel Kennedy but was eventually purchased by a man named Thomas McConnell. The park first opened in October 1957, around the same time the Sputnik Satellite was launched into orbit.
