Pinchot State Forest

Thornhurst Township, Pennsylvania

Welcome to Pennsylvania's Pinchot State Forest formerly known as Lackawanna State Forest, located near Thornhurst Township. This forest was renamed in honor of a man who did so many things for the protection of forests, Gifford Pinchot. Pinchot was chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt to serve as the first chief of what was known as the US Division of Foresty, a position he held from 1898 until 1910. He held a similar position in the Pennsylvania State Government in the early 1920's and eventually was elected Governor of Pennsylvania and served two non-consecutive terms from 1923-1927 and then from 1931-1935. This forest has many miles of multipurpose trails, both aquatic and terrestrial just waiting to be explored.
