Welcome to Altamont Prairie Preserve in Gary, South Dakota. This history of this preserve dates back to 1962 when professors from South Dakota State University approached The Nature Conservancy about preserving this land and using it as an outdoor laboratory. Even at the time it was one of the last remaining untouched pieces of land in the region and today it still remains untouched.
