Fort Pillow State Park
Welcome to Tennessee's Fort Pillow State Park located on the banks of the Mississippi River in Lauderdale County.
Park History: Fort Pillow State Park is a place rich in Civil War History that was named for the Confederate General Gideon Pillow, who is considered to be a hero of the Mexican American War. The fort was first constructed in the early years of the war by the Confederacy in order to protect the south from the Union forces coming down the Mississippi River. In June of 1862, the Union Navy bombarded Fort Pillow and controled it for the next 2 years until April 12th 1964 when a violent battle took the life of Union Major Lionel Booth and gave the Confederacy commanded by Major William Bradford the upper hand. However, even though the Confederates won the battle, after April 12 forces from neither army occupied the Fort.
For the lover of the outdoors Fort Pillow State Park boasts a boat ramp, a softball field, over three dozen campsites (all primitive sites), and much more. Come on out and have fun.
