Welcome to Tennessee's Frozen Head State Park, home to 16 mountain peaks and some of the richest wildflower areas in the state.

Park History: Some of the first European setters to arrive in this region came in the eartly 19th century and included people from England, Scotland, and Germany. After the Civil War the newly established communities began to harvest the regions coal and timber resources. In 1894 the State of Tennessee purchased a large chunk of land in the region in order to build the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. In fact, some of the convicts were put on the chain gang deep in the coal mines. In 1933, Tennessee Governor McAllister claimed a section of the prison lands as Morgan State Forest and a watch tower was built on Frozen Head Mountain. In 1952 Morgan State Forest fell victim to the worst fire season in Tennessee History (how ironic that even "Frozen" Head Mountain was burned. In 1970 the land was the land was transferred from the Forestry division ot the State Park's division and Frozen Head State Park was established. Numerous additions to the park were made over the years and in 1988 most of the park was designated as a State Natural Area.

Flora and Fauna: The forests, mountains, and rivers of Frozen Head State Park range in elevation from as low as 1,340 feet to over 3,000 feet above sea level and help protect the home of numerous plant and animal species. Some of the plants that grow in the park's forests include yellowwoods, oaks, hickories, and magnolias. Some of the wild animals that live here include white-tailed deer, black bears, raccoons, squirrels, snakes, frogs, and turtles. Please treat their home with respect.
