Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge



Welcome to the first National Wildlife Refuge to be established in the State of Texas, the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge, which was established in October of 1935 by Executive Order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in order to protect habitat of migratory birds and other resident wildlife in the plains county of western Texas .
Wildlife: Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including sandhill cranes (One of the largest concentrations on the continent of North America with a quarter million witnessed in 1981), Canadian Geese, mallard ducks, mourning doves, blue herons, sparrows, prairie dogs, bobcats, skunks, badgers, coyotes, and rattlesnakes. Please treat their home with respect.
Refuge History: In the 18th century and before the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Native American tribes hunted the hoards of bison that roamed across this land.
For the lover of the outdoors Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge boasts a campground, a one mile trail, and picnic areas. Come on out and have a blast!
