Sam Houston National Forest
Welcome to Sam Houston National Forest located roughly 50 miles north of Houston.
Forest History: The Sam Houston National Forest and surrounding region were first settled by Native Americans over 12,000 years ago. Some of the tribes that have occupied the region over the years include the Akokisa, Deadose, and Bidai tribes who were mostly hunters and gatherers but may have practiced agriculture. When European settlers arrived in the region the tribes were devastated by disease and growing pressure over the land. Many historic artifacts from as far back as 7,000 years ago to as recently as the 20th century can be found inside the forest boundaries. Please treat these artifacts with respect.
Wildlife: Sam Houston National Forest helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including, deer, raccoons, squirrels, and wild turkeys. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Sam Houston National Forest boasts over 85 miles of multipurpose trails including the 128 mile Lone Star Hiking Trail, the 3,855 acre Little Lake Creek Wilderness Area, numerous campgrounds, and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
