Welcome to Starvation State Park located on the shores of the Starvation Reservoir near Duchesne, Utah.

Park History: The name Starvation is credited to two legends. One legend says that a group of mountain men trapped by winter weather stole food from the local Native American tribe causing the tribe to starve. The other more common legend states that it was the other way around, that the Natives stole food from the mountain men causing the mountain men to starve. However, even if either legend is true, it is highly unlikely that they have reference to the naming of the reservoir. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries many homesteaders and cattlemen settled in the region around the Strawberry River. They did not fund much success and faced tough forces of nature including flooding, cold winters, and hailstorms. Many of their livestock died and they nicknamed the area "Starvation." This is how the park, dam, and reservoir got their names. Starvation State Park was established in 1972.
