Dead Horse Point State Park
Welcome to Dead Horse Point State Park located along the banks of the Colorado River near Moab, Utah not too far from Canyonlands National Park.
Park History: The landscape in and around Dead Horse Point State Park was formed by geologic activity millions of years ago. Over the years deposits were left by winds, ancient seas, streams and lakes. The region's mountains were formed by Igneous activity. The park's plants and animals have had to adapt to a land of extremes. The plants here grow very slowly and trees only 15 feet in height could be centuries in age. Most of the desert animals are nocturnal and some metabolize water from food. Legend has it that cowboys rounded up wild horses here at Dead Horse Point and chose the horses they wanted. One time, for reasons not known, horses were left out in the dry desert to die of thirst. This is how the park got it's name.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts many trails, numerous campsites with electrical hookups but no water, and so much more. Come on out and explore!
