Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail
Welcome to the Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail! This is a non-motorized 28 mile trail that runs parallel to Interstate 80 connecting Park City to the Echo Reservoir while passing through the wetlands of Silver Creek Canyon and the towns of Wanship and Coalville. Motorized vehicles are prohibited but bicycles and horses are allowed. The Mountain Trails Foundation helps to manage this trail.
Trail History: In the 1870's there were many mining operations for both coal and silver in the region. In 1879 Utah Eastern Railroad began building a narrow-gauge line between Coalville and Park City and Union Pacific began building a broad-gauge spur line connecting Echo to Park City. Both of the lines were completed in 1880.
In 1989, over a century later, Union Pacific abandoned the line and worked with the State of Utah and A&K Railroad Materials to make plans for a rails to trails project. In 1992, Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail was established as the first non-motorized rail rail in the State of Utah. Come on out and explore!
