Welcome to Claytor Lake State Park located on the 4,500 acre Claytor Lake in Southwestern Virginia. Needless to say this park offers numerous opportunities for water recreation as well as miles of hiking trails, over 100 campsites, and a dozen cabins.

Park History: Claytor Lake is a reservoir that was built by the Appalachian Power Company in 1939 and remains the companies largest hydroelectric facility to this day with the ability to produces 83,000 killowats of electricity. In 1944, local interest in a state park started to take root and in 1946 private citizens and local business groups raised enough money to purchase 437 acres from the power company and donate it to the state of Virginia as a State Park. In 1962 an additional 35 acres were added. There are over 70 developed campsites. Come on out and have a blast!
