Welcome to Shenandoah National Park sprawling across the Appalachian Mountains and Shenandoah Valley of northern Virginia.

Park History: Some of the rocks inside Shenandoah National Park were formed over one billion years ago when the planet's magma moved upward through the crust, cooled, and fractured. Some of the earliest human inhabitants, Native Americans who were mostly hunters and gatherers, arrived between 8,000 and 9,000 years ago. The region's first European settlers arrived in the 19th century and set up farms, ranches, and orchards. During the era of the Great Depression the Civilian Conservation Corps helped to build many of the park's amenities.

Flora and Fauna: Shenandoah National Park helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the more than 1,300 plant species that grow inside the park boundaries include Virginia Chain Ferns, adder's tongue ferns, maples, birches, ashes, red oaks, and milkweeds. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include black bears, big brown bats, squirrels, deer, bobcats, raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes, box turtles, timber rattlesnakes, peregrine falcons, and bald eagles. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors Shenandoah National Park boasts over 500 miles of trails including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail, numerous waterfalls, and so much more. Come on out and explore!
