Wisconsin State Forests

Welcome to the Black River State Forest!

Forest History: Black River State Forest was established in 1957. The region's geology makes it one of the more unique State Forests in the State of Wisconsin. It is located at the edge of the glacial plains and east of the driftless area. One can hike to the top of Castle Mound in order to view the ancient bed of Lake Wisconsin.

The forest protects habitat for many species including the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly. The forest also provides numerous recreational opportunities. Come on out and explore!
