Wisconsin State Forests

Welcome to the Brule River State Forest!

Forest History: Brule River State Forest was established in 1907 when the Frederick Weyerhaeuser Nebagamon lumber company donated the land to the State of Wisconsin. The forest boundary was extended in 1959 and in 1979 much of Lake Superior's shoreline was added to the forest. The forest has a rich cultural and natural history. Some of the most famous visitors include Presidents Coolidge, Cleveland, Eisenhower, Hoover, and Grant. The forest protects every mile of riverbank of the Bois Brule River and in 2007 the forest received 6,000 additional acres as a 100th birthday present.

Today the forest provides habitat for numerous plant and animal species. Some of the forests plants include red pine, aspen, scrub oak, jack pine, and wild sarsaparilla. Some of the animal species include bobcats, deer, timber wolves, bald eagles, otters, badgers, minks, black bears, beavers, sharp tailed grouse, and over 200 species of birds.

The forest also provides numerous recreational opportunities including dozens of miles of multipurpose trails and two family campgrounds. Come on out and explore!
