Bighorn National Forest

Wyoming

Welcome to the magnificent Bighorn National Forest nestled in the Bighorn Mountains of northern Wyoming halfway between Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore.

Forest History: For thousands of years, this land has helped provide humans with the resources they need to survive. Before the arrival of European settlers, the Native American tribes of the region hunted the forest's game, fished it's rivers, and used it's wood to build their homes. The Bighorn National Forest, one of the oldest National Forests in the nation and considered one of the most diverse landscapes in the State of Wyoming, was established on February 22, 1897 by President Cleveland and named after the Bighorn River. The elevations inside the forest range from as low as 5,500 feet ASL to as high as 13,175 feet ASL at the summit of Cloud Peak.

Wildlife: The Bighorn National Forest helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including black bears, deer, elk, and bighorn sheep. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors Bighorn National Forest boasts many mountains to climb, miles of multipurpose trails, the Antelope Butte and Meadowlark Ski resorts, and so much more. Come on out and explore!
